Spritecraft is the fun and easy way to transform any image into Minecraft block pixel art.

Spritecraft is an easy to use program that lets you take virtually any image and transform it into a Minecraft-y work of pixel art – but that’s only the beginning. With this program you’ll be able to export schematics directly to MCEdit, turn off specific resource types, use any texture pack you want and even choose to just use the sides or tops of blocks - and all for free, we might add!

With Spritecraft you get everything you need to turn out unique works of art, all with a single click of a button. It’s important to point out that the Full version (which is still free, donations are accepted but it’s not required to upgrade) supports large images up to 6000 pixels wide!

So how does it work? You load your image file (jpg, png, bmp) that you want to “Minecraftify” into Spritecraft. From there you’ll be able to select specific texture packs (including any HD packs you may have), deselect certain resources you don’t want to use (we’re looking at you, grass) and then hit the button to get the process started.

One important thing to keep in mind about Spritecraft is the simpler the image, the faster the render. If you’re trying to render an enormous image that’s 6000x4000 pixels, expect long render times and mixed results.

Other than issues with larger images, this app is able to create some stunning effects with Minecraft blocks that you just don’t see with many other photofilter apps. If you’re looking to recreate the look of Minecraft and give your pictures a cool geeky look, give this app a try.

Pros

  • Easy to Use For basic rendering all you have to do is hit the render button and let the program work. Those that want more control can expect to spend a little time learning more about the program and toying with advanced options.
  • 100% Free Forever This app is completely free! Even if you go with the full version you can get it for free, though the developers do ask you to donate if you’ve found any of the advanced features useful.
  • Creates Very Unique Looking Images This app recreates traditional pixel art with Minecraft blocks; you and your friends will do a doubletake when you realize what the blocks are made of.

Cons

  • Works Poorly on Larger and Complex Images This program can work poorly on more complex images, so you’ll either want to work with smaller sized images or study up on how the program works to improve the quality of the output.
  • Donationware The program is free but there is a little donation nagbar at the bottom that can be annoying. Not a deal-breaker for most people, but might be for some.
